WHY clotheslines?
DID YOU KNOW...
That in the US, clothes dryers are responsible for 40 million metric tons of annual carbon dioxide emissions, represent $9 billion in annual energy bills, and account for approximately 6% of residential electricity consumption? NRDC
That in China, it’s hard to find dryers sold in stores despite industrialization, Brazil doesn’t even keep national statistics on dryer usage because so few people own them, and in Italy, only 3% of households have a dryer? For the vast majority of the world, hang drying is the norm - in the US, 85% of households have a dryer. Green Living
That estimates show only 8% of households line-dry their laundry during 5 months of the year, and if all Americans who currently do not use a clothesline started to use one for ten months of the year, we could avoid 12 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere annually? Project Laundry List
To do our part to reduce carbon emissions, US citizens need to make consumer shifts at home.

ABOUT clotheslines are cool
Clotheslines are cool is working to get low or no-cost clotheslines to households across the US to promote eco-conscious consumer shifts at home and to eliminate the stigma around line drying clothes.
We do this by:
1️⃣ Facilitating the distribution of low or no-cost clotheslines to humans across the US by fundraising to cover the product cost and eliminate the barrier to entry
2️⃣ Growing a social community of eco-conscious “clothesliners” who can spread the word and help eliminate stigma, #clotheslinesarecool
3️⃣ Education and advocacy in the form of collaboration with other organizations to increase awareness and research
In 2023 we'd like to fundraise to cover the distribution of 300 high quality retractable clotheslines for people across the US.
Clotheslines are cool is a movement that is being transparently managed and funded on OpenCollective.
HOW we plan to make clotheslines cool again
1️⃣ Facilitating the distribution of low or no-cost clotheslines to humans across the US by fundraising to cover the product cost and eliminate the barrier to entry. To distribute low or no-cost clotheslines, we partner with a retractable clothesline manufacturer(s) to arrange a wholesale or discounted rate for purchase of high quality, versatile clotheslines that work for indoor or outdoor use. We are fundraiseing by partnering with awesome outdoor-centric, eco-conscious companies who want to help spread the #clotheslinesarecool mantra.
2️⃣ Growing a social community of eco-conscious “clothesliners” who can spread the word and help eliminate stigma. To grow a community of eco-conscious “clothesliners” to spread the #clotheslinesarecool mantra and help eliminate stigma, we’d create a network of ambassadors and foster impactful social media campaigns that encourage clothesline users to proudly share this movement with their networks. We’d also engage with local Sustainability departments in our communities and set up at local community events to spread the word.
3️⃣ Education and advocacy in the form of collaboration with other organizations to increase awareness and research. To educate and advocate communities, we’d enter into partnerships with other eco-centric organizations that are working to encourage consumer shifts and produce additional compelling environmental research
